Performing Umrah is a spiritual journey that every Muslim dreams of. It is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and a way to seek forgiveness, blessings, and closeness to Allah SWT. This guide will help you perform Umrah correctly, step by step, ensuring you follow the Sunnah without mistakes.
Step 1: Preparing for Ihram (Before Reaching Miqat) 🚿
📍 Miqat for Indian Pilgrims Flying to Jeddah: Qarn Al-Manazil (near Taif, Saudi Arabia)
Ihram is a sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Umrah. This must be done before crossing the Miqat boundary.
✈️ When & Where to Wear Ihram?
- At Home – Wear Ihram before leaving for the airport.
- At Delhi Airport – After checking in, wear Ihram before boarding the flight.
- In-Flight – Wear Ihram about an hour before reaching Miqat.
🔹 Steps to Enter Ihram:
✅ Perform Ghusl (Full Purification Bath).
✅ Men wear two white unstitched sheets (one around the waist, one over the shoulders).
✅ Women wear normal modest clothing (no need for special Ihram).
✅ Pray 2 Rak’ahs Nafl Salah (if possible).
✅ Make the Niyyah (Intention) for Umrah: “Allahumma inni uridul-umrata fa yassirha li wa taqabbalha minni.” (“O Allah! I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”)
✅ Start reciting the Talbiyah: “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.”
Step 2: Arrival in Jeddah & Journey to Makkah 🛬
🔹 At Jeddah Airport: Complete immigration, collect luggage and meet your transport representative. 🔹 Journey to Makkah: Approx. 1.5 – 2 hours drive; continue reciting Talbiyah.
Step 3: Performing Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba 7 Times) 🕋
🔹 Upon reaching Makkah:
- Check in at the hotel 🏨 and freshen up (do not apply perfume).
- Perform Wudu (Ablution).
- Walk to Masjid Al-Haram while reciting Talbiyah.
🔹 How to Perform Tawaf (Step by Step)
1️⃣ Start near Hajr-e-Aswad (Black Stone).
2️⃣ Make intention: “O Allah! I perform Tawaf for Your pleasure and nearness.”
3️⃣ Say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” and begin walking counterclockwise.
4️⃣ Complete 7 rounds around the Kaaba.
5️⃣ Men should walk briskly (Ramal) in the first 3 rounds.
6️⃣ Recite Dua:
- You may recite Quran, make personal supplications, or say: “Rabbana Atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina azaban-nar.” 📌 If it’s too crowded, gesture towards Hajr-e-Aswad instead of kissing it (Istilam).
Step 4: Praying at Maqam Ibrahim & Drinking Zamzam Water 🧴
🔹 Pray 2 Rak’ahs Salah near Maqam Ibrahim (if space is available).
🔹 Drink Zamzam water while making dua.
Step 5: Performing Sa’i (Walking Between Safa & Marwah) 🏃
📍 Where to Start? – At Safa Hill, facing the Kaaba.
🔹 How to Perform Sa’i (Step by Step)
1️⃣ Stand at Safa Hill, face the Kaaba, and recite: “Inna as-Safa wal-Marwah min sha’a’irillah.”
2️⃣ Make dua, then walk towards Marwah Hill.
3️⃣ Men jog between the green lights (women walk normally).
4️⃣ At Marwah, make dua, then walk back to Safa.
🔹 Complete 7 Laps as follows:

- Preferable: Shave head completely (Halq).
- Option: Trim hair evenly from all over the head (Taqsir). 🔹 Women:
- Trim a fingertip length from the end of the hair. 📌 Once the hair is cut, Umrah is complete! 🎉 Ihram restrictions are lifted.
What to Do After Umrah? 🕋
✅ Stay in Makkah as long as possible. ✅ Pray all Salahs in Masjid Al-Haram. ✅ Do extra Tawaf & make lots of duas. ✅ Visit Jannat-ul-Mu’alla (Graveyard of Makkah).
What is Damm (Penalty) & When is It Required?
🔹 If you break any Ihram rule, you must offer Damm (sacrificial animal).

❌ Using perfume in Ihram.
❌ Cutting nails/hair before completing Umrah.
