The Battle of Badr, fought on 17th Ramadan, 2 AH (624 CE), was the first and most significant battle in Islamic history. It was a defining moment where faith triumphed over numbers, and divine intervention led to a historic victory for the Muslims.
Background of the Battle of Badr
After Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions migrated to Madinah, the Quraysh of Makkah remained hostile. They imposed an economic blockade and plotted against the Muslims. In response, Allah (SWT) permitted self-defense, leading to the confrontation at Badr.

The Strength of the Two Armies
📌 Muslim Army:
- 313 soldiers
- 2 horses
- 70 camels
- Lightly armed
📌 Quraysh Army:
- 1,000 soldiers
- 200 cavalry
- Hundreds of camels
Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Muslims stood firm in faith and prepared for battle.
The Duel Before Battle
Before the battle officially began, three Quraysh warriors—Waleed bin Utbah, Shayba bin Rabia, and Utbah bin Rabia—challenged the Muslims. They were met by Hamza (RA), Ali (RA), and Ubaidah bin Harith (RA), who defeated them, setting the tone for the battle.
Divine Help & Victory of Muslims
As the battle raged, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prayed for divine assistance, and Allah (SWT) responded:
📖 إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَٱسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّى مُمِدُّكُم بِأَلْفٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ
“Remember when you asked help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): ‘I will help you with a thousand angels, each behind the other in succession.”
— Surah Al-Anfal (8:9)
With divine intervention, the Muslims defeated the Quraysh, forcing them to retreat.

Aftermath of the Battle
- 14 Muslim soldiers were martyred, while the Quraysh lost 70 prominent warriors, including Abu Jahl and Umayyad ibn Khalaf.
- The Muslim captives were treated with kindness, reflecting Islam’s principles of mercy and justice.
